The power of colour in design: the basics
Colour evokes emotional reactions in all of us - in fact, research shows that people make a subconscious judgement about a person, environment or brand within 90 seconds of coming into contact with it, and 90% of that judgement is based on colour alone. We can effectively guide emotions based on the colours we use, giving people an immediate feeling when they view a design - which means it has to be selected very carefully. Colours can convey deep messages and attract huge levels of attention without saying a word - colour is a uniquely emotional language which must always be used with care and thought.
At Ditto, we place heavy emphasis on choosing the right colours for a given brand. Far from being a decorative excercise in selecting colours that look nice or work well together, we take time to find colours that create the right response. Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be sharing some insights into the properties of different hues, and how you can use them to create the right look and feel with your brand. Enjoy!
